Will I be asleep when in hypnosis?
No you won’t. A trance is a very relaxed state of the mind. It is a state of its own, just like the awake state and the sleep state but differs from both, it is actually more similar to the awake state than to sleep.
Will I be unconscious when in a trance?
No you won’t. You are always aware of what is going on and retain full control.
Will I remember anything after having been in a trance?
Yes. Only if you go into a very deep trance and the therapist gives you suggestions of amnesia (total forgetting), you will not remember about being in a trance. Only in very few, specific cases this is necessary for the therapy to take place.
However it is normal not to remember every single detail of the therapy session even if it took place in a light or medium trance, just like you normally would not remember every detail of a lengthy conversation you had with a friend.
Will I be rid of my problems after one session of hypnotherapy?
In most cases not so. Hypnosis is no magic and although you will feel the benefits instantly, it will take some time for the issues to be transformed. This is because many issues are complex and therefore need to be tackled from different angles, which requires time; however hypnotherapy remains one of the most effective ways to resolve issues.
During hypnosis, will I remember about a past life?
Only if the technique undertaken is past life regression and this is normally not utilised, unless specifically requested and discussed beforehand.
Is there a chance that I might be stuck in trance?
There is no such a thing, as even in the rare possibility that you may not come back to full awareness when asked, the therapist will say the words again until you become fully aware. The reason why some people might need prompting more than once is that they are enjoying that lovely state of relaxation.
Are people who can be hypnotised gullible people?
No they aren’t. On the contrary, while it is true that in general everyone can be hypnotised, those that respond better are people with a strong active mind, rich in imagination and dexterity.
It can be safely said that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis as even in the therapist’s practice or on a stage show, a person chooses to let themselves be hypnotised.
Do people who go to a therapist have a mental illness?
No. People from all sorts of life may choose to consult a therapist with issues that range from mild (stop smoking, nail biting, de-stressing, procrastination) to severe (alcoholism, abuse, trauma). The reasons why they choose to see a therapist may vary: they may be aware or suspect that their symptoms are psycho-somatic; they may be reluctant to use traditional medical treatments or they may turn to a therapist as a last resource after having been in treatment for their symptoms with drugs for a long time and having received little lasting relief. Realising that we may have an issue is the very first step to recovery, no matter how small or big the issue is.
On the other side, persons with severe mental disorders are not suitable for hypnotherapy and need adequate psychiatric treatment.
Can a physical issue or illness be resolved with hypnotherapy?
It is possible to resolve a physical issue accessing the subconscious mind as in many cases an illness is caused by the subconscious mind as a way to get a person’s attention to an emotional issue. If medicines seem to do very little to improve the symptom or the symptom keeps re-occurring when there’s no reason why it should, it is worth exploring the issue with hypnotherapy.
