Navigating Family Dynamics During the Festive Season
The festive season brings joy and excitement, but for many, family reunions can stir up challenges, as family dynamics come into full force—no matter the occasion.
Whether visiting relatives or hosting a meal over the Christmas period, experiencing the family atmosphere is always great, however most families have at least one person who can be challenging—perhaps someone with little social skills who stays on the side lines and later complains about being left out, or someone who makes a fuss of little things and have little regard for the special occasion of celebration and joy, or yet again the one who feels the need to criticise everything from the decorations to the meal but only whispering it to every single guest in the room. And what about that same one person who takes centre-stage and only ever talks about themselves and how great they are, leaving actually no room for others to speak?
As you probably can imagine there are reasons why people are the way they are and behave the way they do, though it can be hard to understand, even when someone explains it to you.
It must be kept in mind that family dynamics are as real as the air we breathe, even though invisible, just like air. Unresolved situations from the past among family members bear negative emotions that may lay just under the surface or deeper in the unconscious, but ready to be triggered by words, tone of voice and even body language, so it’s no surprise that even the most wonderful celebration can leave you with a bitter after taste for days.
So, here’s a few tips on how to prepare for the possibility of things going differently from the Christmas fairy tale expectations, and to help you deal with that possibility, as well as in the worst case scenario, how to recover from the wonderful time of Christmas!
- Prepare for it by:
Thinking and reminding yourself that everyone is doing the best that they can with the awareness and knowledge they have at that moment in time. - Try and go into the situation keeping in mind that no matter how hard it is for you to understand why someone cannot be more polite, less intrusive, more cheerful at least at Christmas etc. there are good reasons why which are not visible to most people. We are talking here about unresolved issues from the past, past unresolved family dynamics, past unresolved mental health issues, present mental health challenges etc. Remember, none of these are obvious, you can’t see any of the scars when a person is fully dressed and especially when they have on their best suit for the celebrations!
- Download my ‘Protective Bubble’ MP3 free of charge at the link below using coupon code #Bubble#Protect!# – valid only until 31/12/24 – and listen to it daily at least once, preferably when you go to sleep for at least 1-2 weeks before you take part in the events. This is a practical tool that you can use at will when needed, but don’t be surprised if you’ll do the technique automatically whenever you need, that’s the power of your mind!
Deal with it by:
- Imagining you are on a stage where everyone is an actor and playing a part that they haven’t necessarily picked. This will help you remain detached from those family mishaps as well as help you perform your role as best as you can, so as not to heat up the situation any further.
- Remember that sometimes the best way to interact is by keeping silent, nod and smile… and maybe excuse yourself not long afterwards so as to send a clear message of your disapproval.
- ‘Wear your Protective bubble’ as you approach certain people or even before the whole celebration starts, or from the moment you get up if you wish!
Recovering from it by:
- Simply listening to healing music once or twice a day for a couple of days, preferably when you go to bed, can be enough to make you feel at ease once again. Tibetan or crystal bowls are amazing, here’s my favourite picks to help you relax and rejuvenate inside.

- If you are familiar with meditation, you can use it as the practice to help you let go of the thoughts of the challenges you had over Christmas, so as not to trigger your feelings and risk carrying on the saga into the new year, which you definitely don’t want!
- If you are not familiar with meditation, this is a great opportunity to dip your toes into the wonderful practice of taking care of yourself emotionally and kicking off the new year feeling empowered and refreshed.
Having said this, I hope your Christmas unfolds without the need for these strategies, however if you expect some challenges, you now have tools to approach the celebrations more prepared, manage tricky moments with ease and recover more gracefully.
Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas season!
